Halloween Pet Safety: Keep the Frights Fun

halloween pet hazards

Halloween is a time for costumes, treats, and celebrating with neighbors. But some holiday favorites can create risks for dogs and cats. Our team at West Loop Veterinary Care shares a few simple ways to help your pets enjoy a safer Halloween.

1. Keep Candy Out of Reach

Chocolate is toxic to dogs and cats, and xylitol, a sweetener found in some sugar-free candy and gum, is dangerous for dogs. Raisins can also cause serious illness. Store candy bowls and trick-or-treat bags in a secure cabinet, and pick up discarded wrappers. Offer your pet their own pet-safe treats instead.

2. Choose Comfortable Costumes

If your pet enjoys dressing up, choose a costume that allows them to see, breathe, and move freely. Avoid dangling accessories or small pieces they could swallow. Always supervise your pet in costume, and remove it if they freeze, hide, or seem uncomfortable.

3. Prepare for Trick-or-Treaters

Doorbells, visitors, and unfamiliar costumes can overwhelm pets. Set up a quiet, secure room with water, bedding, and a favorite toy away from the front door. Check that your pet’s ID tags and microchip registration have your current contact information.

4. Watch the Decorations

Use battery-operated candles in pumpkins to reduce the risk of burns. Keep electrical cords and small decorations out of reach, especially anything your pet might chew or swallow.

What to Do if Your Pet Eats Something Unsafe

Contact your veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control at (888) 426-4435 immediately if you suspect your pet swallowed something toxic. Have the packaging available, if possible, so you can explain what they ate.
